Season: September to January
Description: Brussels sprouts are relatives of the cabbage, both hailing from the Brassica family. Although the origins of Brussels sprouts are unknown, they are thought to come from Belgium's capital Brussels where mentions of this vegetable can be traced to the late 16th century. The crop remained local until it spread across Europe during World War I, and is now cultivated throughout Europe and the United States. The plant phytonutrients found in Brussels sprouts are known to fight a number of different cancers, help with the body's natural defenses, and prevent birth defects. Brussels sprouts are available all year round, but their peak growing season is autumn through early spring.
