Season: August to April
Description: We think that the wild ancestor of the carrot originated in Afghanistan, where diverse wild carrots still grow today. The modern carrot first appeared in Europe about 1,000 years ago, where yellow and red varieties were available. The common orange carrot did not appear until the 1600s in the Netherlands. The organic compound Carotene is responsible for the bright orange color. In 1998, a farmer in Alaska grew a world record 19lb carrot.
