Season: October to December

Description: Cranberries are indigenous to the northern states of North America. Native Americans used them for a variety of purposes, including poultices for wounds. They were also eaten in pemmican, a kind of dried meat cake, and were made into a sweetened sauce using maple sugar. By 1820 cranberries were being shipped to Europe and eaten on the boat ride over to prevent scurvy. Currently, the little red berries are grown in flooded beds and are popular in juice, sauce, and dried form, and also can be enjoyed raw. Cranberries are widely known to help prevent urinary tract infections by helping bacteria slide out of the bladder better, and they are also a good source of antioxidants. Cranberries taste best during the harvest season, between September and December.
