Season: Year round
Description: The word onion is derived from the Latin word "unio," meaning "one," because unlike other members of the Allium family, each onion plant produces a single bulb. Yellow storage onions are available all year, but the sweet varieties are not. Onions have been cultivated for over five thousand years, and are native to Asia and the Middle East. Onions are rich in chromium, vitamin C, and dietary fiber; and their pungent and spicy flavor makes them an easy and inexpensive addition to almost any meal.
