Season: July to September
Description: Despite the name, it's only loosely considered a melon. Originally from Africa, watermelons are 92% water and 6% sugar. You know who liked watermelons as much as you do? King Tut! They found the seeds in his tomb. Closer to home, watermelons were eaten by Native Americans as far back as the 1600s. The rinds are edible and you can find them pickled at some hip New York restaurants these days. Watermelons are widely available at the markets during the summer months.
