Description: Our Demeter certified 400 acre Biodynamic farm encompasses a dynamic balance of vegetable crops and livestock. We strive to create a self-contained system where outside inputs are minimized and the farm individuality is strengthened. 10 acres of vegetables, 60 dairy cows, a few dozen beef cows and young stock, and a few dozen pigs interact with the landscape, the sun, the rain, and the cosmos in a process mediated by the farmers -- using the tools and lessons of Biodynamic agriculture. We are also certified organic. Our Dairy takes the milk from our cows and creates delicious organic yogurts, raw milk aged cheeses, pasteurized fresh cheeses, and buttermilk. Our Bakery uses whole grains freshly milled in our own small mill, as well as organic flours and ingredients from regional sources (where possible), to create delicious organic breads, rolls, granola, pastries, cookies, and other treats. In our Sauerkraut Cellar we use traditional preservation methods to transform organic, regionally grown produce into healthful sauerkrauts and other fermented veggies, high in Vitamin C and filled with “probiotics” – beneficial bacteria that aid digestion and immune systems. Education for both children and adults is an integral part of Hawthorne Valley Farm. Children: Hundreds of elementary & high school children engage in the life of the farm each year through the Visiting Students Program and Summer Camp and our Learning Center. Adults: We conduct a variety of programs to train the next generation of farmers, including hosting several apprentice farmers each year. Our Farmscape Ecology Program assists farmers working to manage their land with ecological sensitivity. We offer training in Anthroposophy and Waldorf Education. We host lectures, workshops, and conferences related to food and farming. Hawthorne Valley Farm is part of the nonprofit Hawthorne Valley Association, promoting social and cultural renewal through education, agriculture, and the arts.
